Alicia Keys had prepared to be a musician her entire life. Playing piano by age 7, majoring in choir in school, and growing up listening to the likes of Roberta Flack and Nina Simone – she prepared well. At 16, Alicia Keys graduated as high school valedictorian and was accepted at Columbia University. With an excellent education and college awaiting her, Alicia left it all on the table and instead pursued a musical career by signing a record deal with Columbia Records.
After a fallout with Columbia, Alicia went with Clive Davis and J Records. While she played local shows to get noticed, Clive lined up “the breakthrough” moment for Alicia. A coveted live spot on The Oprah Winfrey Show provided 40 million viewers a preview of her future hit “Fallin”. With that, the buzz for her upcoming album was unmatched by anything else in the industry at the time. That buzz was proven when her debut album Songs In A Minor debuted at number one – the stayed in the Top 20 for 29 weeks and selling seven million copies.
Then came the Grammy Awards. Widely accepted by the public with strong album sales, the next step was to by credited by the music industry. Winning five Grammy Awards for her debut album – including Best New Artist and Song of the Year - did just that. Alicia Keys was the hottest thing in the industry at that time. Alicia Keys got to the top of the mountain very quick. And she became determined to stay there with her 2003 sophomore release The Diary Of Alicia Keys. She has become a true force to be reckoned with after just 3 years and two albums.
