Tim McGraw Biography & History

When Tim McGraw debuted in the early '90s, few would have predicted that he would eventually take over Garth Brooks' position as the most popular male singer in country music. Yet that's exactly what he did, thanks to a string of multi-platinum albums, a high-profile marriage to fellow superstar Faith Hill, and Brooks' own inevitable decline. His sound epitomized the strain of commercial country that dominated his era: updated honky tonk and Southern-fried country-rock on the up-tempo tunes, well-polished, adult contemporary-tinged pop on the ballads. By 1999, he had taken over from Garth Brooks as the most popular singer in country music.

McGraw and his touring band, the Dancehall Doctors, retreated to upstate New York to record the 2002 studio album, Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors. The first single, "Red Ragtop," suggested an abortion-related story line, although the ensuing controversy didn't hinder his career. He filmed the video to "She's My Kind of Rain" in London, and his 2003 tour featured more than two hours of music, without an opening act.

With a decade-long hot streak that encompasses 19 Number One singles, six multi-platinum albums, sales of over 25 million albums and an enduring status as one of country music's most popular and respected performers, Tim McGraw would be in an ideal position to rest on his laurels and coast for awhile.
