Dallas Cowboys Lose
heartbreaker to Seahawks 21-20
Game Preview
If the Cowboys were looking for any momentum
entering the playoffs, they didn't find it on Sunday. Dallas suffered
its second straight defeat, this time a 39-31 home loss to the Detroit
Lions, and will begin the postseason as the fifth seed, traveling to
face the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on Wild Card
Weekend. "I can't tell you how disappointed I am. I really can't,"
coach Bill Parcells said. "This is the low point for me in a long
time." Tony Romo threw for 321 yards and two touchdowns for Dallas
(9-7) but also had four turnovers and was stopped at the Lions' 2-yard
line on a fourth-down play with 16 seconds left. The Cowboys secondary
struggled again, giving up four touchdown passes.
Seattle avoided losing a fourth straight game
heading into the playoffs, but the team did lose two more defensive
backs due to injury. Already with Marcus Trufant out, Kelly Herndon
broke his ankle in the first quarter and Jimmy Williams was carted off
the field in the second half. So even with the 23-7 win over the
Buccaneers, head coach Mike Holmgren must find some healthy bodies for
the Seahawks' first-round playoff game next weekend against the
Cowboys. On the plus side, the offense is getting a little better with
time, but without a solid defense, it will be too tiring for them to
play catch-up ball in the postseason. "Our record isn't what we had
hoped, but there's something about 9-7 being a lot better than 8-8
even though it's just one game," coach Mike Holmgren said. "The
players feel that, and I think the organization does. Now we start our
new season."
Despite owning the top wild card, Dallas goes into January having lost
consecutive games for the first time all season. The Cowboys also have
dropped three of four since owning a two-game division lead in early
December. The situation is equally disappointing for the Seahawks, who
needed a win in the finale to halt a three-game skid. "Our record
isn't what we had hoped, to be honest with you, but there's something
about 9-7 being a lot better than 8-8," coach Mike Holmgren said. The
teams have met 10 times, with Dallas holding a 6-4 edge, but this will
be the first postseason encounter.
