New York Giants Lose 23-20 to
Philadelphia Eagles
Game Preview
Thanks to Tiki Barber's latest -- and perhaps
greatest -- record-breaking performance, the Giants made it into the
playoffs after all. Barber rushed for three touchdowns and a
franchise-record 234 yards to help the Giants fend off the Washington
Redskins 34-28 in the regular-season finale. The Giants held a 27-7
lead before the Redskins started to rally within 27-21 and 34-28.
Barber gave the Giants a 10-7 lead with a 15-yard score, pushed it to
17-7 with a 55-yard scamper, and made it 34-21 with a 50-yard romp.
"There are certain things that motivate you, push you," Barber said.
"It's partly because of the circumstances of this game, my last one.
Most important, we had to win to keep playing." Tim Carter caught a
touchdown pass and Jay Feely kicked two field goals in the first half.
The Giants are 8-8 and will meet the Eagles on Sunday, Jan. 9, at 4:30
p.m. ET on Wild Card Weekend.
The Eagles didn't need a win in the regular-season
finale on Sunday, but they got one anyway. A loss by the Cowboys
earlier in the day gave Philadelphia the NFC East crown, so the Eagles
played mostly their backups from the first drive on in a 24-17 win
over the Atlanta Falcons. Philly (10-6) will now host the New York
Giants in a first-round playoff game on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
Against Atlanta, A.J. Feeley threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns
and Hank Baskett caught seven passes for 177 yards and a touchdown to
lead the Eagles. "We're not done," coach Andy Reid said. "It's a nice
one to have, but there's not a lot of time to think about it with the
Giants coming in."
With their victory over the Redskins Saturday night, the Giants earned
the final NFC wild-card berth and a third game with the NFC East
champion Philadelphia Eagles. The teams split their regular-season
meetings, with each winning on the other's field.
New York rallied from a 24-7 fourth-quarter deficit in Week 2 to post
a 30-24 overtime win in Philadelphia. The Eagles returned the favor in
Week 15, riding a 22-point fourth quarter and the outstanding play of
Jeff Garcia.
