The Country Girl Synopsis &
Storyline
Clifford Odets' The Country Girl
features the title character, Georgie, who is married to actor Frank
Elgin, once a great theater star and now down on his luck. When
Frank is offered a major role by hotshot director Bernie Dodd, he
has the chance to make a major comeback.
Eight-time Tony Award winner Mike Nichols will direct Academy Award
winners Morgan Freeman (as Frank) and Frances McDormand (as Georgie)
in the first major New York production of The Country Girl in
more than 30 years. Rounding out the trio of leads is stage and TV
favorite Peter Gallagher as Bernie. The Country Girl was
first produced on Broadway in 1950 starring Uta Hagen, Paul Kelly
and Steven Hill. A film adaptation followed in 1954 starring Bing
Crosby, Grace Kelly and William Holden.
